The past week has taught me a lot about migration trends and I found the content quite interesting. I admit to be naive or ignorant to the layers of complexities that enshrine migration.
I think of nativist movements where people dislike or object to new members joining the community; and now understand how closely related to xenophobia it is. Almost so close, that I question why there are two separate terms?
It feels as though mass migration is almost never voluntary and it sends generational ripples. Where the U waves and W waves can be experienced in both leaving and coming back. The amount of emotional, physical and psychological impacts are alarming. It pains me to think of going through such a toll to experience xenophobia or nativist attitude's.
Things that come to mind, people fleeing their homelands and taking weeks or months to travel from Central America Northwards, only to be met by others wearing MAGA hats. Additionally I wonder how Palestine and Israel came to be. The Nakba of 1948 was a true displacement, where land and homes were taken. Today, Israelis are allowed to travel within Israel and abroad. Whereas Palestinians are not. Witnessing the mass migration from the North to the South, and East to the West of Gaza. Only to find there is no place safe left. When did national state immigration policies and pluralism warp into an open air prison and the situation we have today.
